1959年5月，文·瑞姆斯出生在纽约的哈莱姆。他从高中起学习表演和戏剧，从Julliard戏剧学校毕业后，他开始出演莎士比亚剧。1985年他在电视电影《Go Tell It On the Mountain》首次亮相荧屏，后在《迈阿密风云》（Miami Vice）、《霹雳神兵》（Tour of Duty）等电视剧中饰演小角色。获演1994年影片《低俗小说》（Pulp Fiction）后，文·瑞姆斯迎来了事业的重大突破，不久他被导演布莱恩·德·帕尔玛（Brian De Palma）看中，在《碟中谍》（Mission: Impossible）中扮演黑客Luther Stickell。他成熟老道的表演不但让观众记住了他的面孔，还赢得众多片约。
接下来他主演了HBO制作的《Don King: Only in America》，他扮演的全球最声名狼藉的拳击经纪人唐·金一角，为他赢得了金球奖系列短剧最佳男演员称号。在《穿梭阴阳界》（Bringing out the Dead）里他的表演同样引人注目，2000年他在《碟中谍2》中再度扮演了Luther Stickell。此后他塑造的角色有《活死人的黎明》（Dawn of the Dead）中勇斗僵尸的警察，并用低沉的嗓音演绎了《星际宝贝》（Lilo & Stitch）中Cobra Bubbles一角。
