在很多西方国家，这首歌通常会在平安夜演唱，象征送走旧年而迎接新年的来临，有时也会在圣诞节的时候唱，这就是这首歌听得像圣诞歌的原因。它的主调并没有中文版本那样感伤，而这首歌在很多亚洲地区中的学校毕业礼或葬礼中作为主题曲，象征告别或结束的情感。
这首歌曾被不少经典电影引用，如在由费雯丽主演的经典电影《魂断蓝桥》中，此曲被用作为主旋律，而在《风云人物》中，片尾众人合唱此曲。
在BBC逍遥音乐会的最后一夜上，音乐会正式部分结束后，观众有自发地合唱这首歌的习惯。
据知，部分百货公司或机构在临近关门的时间，会播出此音乐，示意客人尽快离开。
这首歌的译名很多，有称之为《骊歌》，有的根据原题译为《忆往日》、《过去的时光》，有的根据词意取名为《友谊之歌》或《友谊地久天长》，也有根据《魂断蓝桥》在乐队领班说的“一路平安”这句话，和玛拉送别劳宁时说的“一路平安”而取名为《一路平安》
