Pete Went在被《Kerrang!》采访时，解称歌曲来源于圣经中大卫大战歌利亚的故事，想要写首关于有些奇怪的能人。

《Centuries》取样了乐团自创唱片厂牌DCD2 Records旗下女歌手Lolo翻唱自Suzanne Vega的1987年畅销曲《Tom's Diner》。Patrick Stump阐述乐队想向流行歌曲文化中注入如"Tom's Diner"中的元素。

Fall Out Boy乐队和Paramore乐队2014年9月4日结束monumentour，Fall Out Boy乐队用摩尔斯电码发布预告的歌曲名称。英国广播公司第一电台于2014年9月8日发布歌曲，第二天全球正式发布。
